Pick of the Week: Bar Boheme Sunday Brunch

James Trees Puts a French Twist on Brunch

Bar Boheme, the contemporary French restaurant in the Arts District led by Chef/Owner James Trees, opened in April 2025 and has since garnered a loyal fan base. The native Las Vegan chef has proven himself over and over by creating the highly successful eateries Esther’s Kitchen, Al Solito Posto, Ada’s, and High Steaks Vegas. As all but his steakhouse at the Rio are Italian, you wouldn’t be blamed for assuming he is solely Italian-focused. However, Chef James asserts, “French cuisine was absolutely my first love. I’ve been wanting to open this restaurant for years.” The French cuisine is a return to his roots, as during his time at the Culinary Institute of America he interned at Café Boulud in NYC and after graduating spent time in the kitchens of Alize and Andre’s with legendary Chef Andre Rochat.

The 120-seat Bar Boheme’s décor includes wide windows overlooking Main Street in the heart of the Las Vegas Arts District, a zebra marble bar, teal and mauve banquettes, wicker-backed chairs, an open terrace overlooking a private grassy space, tables covered in white tablecloths, and a botanical feel with floral wall décor, flower-inspired artwork, and live plants.

Shortly after its one-year anniversary, Bar Boheme launched its three-course Sunday brunch menu on Mother’s Day, and over the past few weeks it has blossomed into one of the most distinctive offerings in the city, with an extensive à la carte menu (a three-course prix fixe option is available). Served from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Chef James is putting his own twist on brunch, adding French nuances.

Pastrami Sturgeon

While the menu changes frequently, highlights during my recent visit included Pastrami Sturgeon with vol-au-vant, honey crisp apple, celery, dill, and horseradish; Steak Tartare “Bahn Mi” on a toasted baguette with pate, basil, mint, pickles, and nuoc cham; Duck Egg Benedict made French style with a croissant instead of an English muffin with duck confit, blood orange, and maltaise; “Chicken Fried” Frog Legs & Waffles served with salted butter and spicy maple syrup—a stupendous pairing that was the first time I’ve had frog legs in decades; Tomato Tartine with rustic sourdough, chevre, tomato confiture, and market tomatoes; Quiche Lorraine with jambon de Paris, melted leeks, gruyere, and croissant crust; and Smoked Salmon Crepe Cake with egg mimosa and smoked trout roe.

You’ll want to begin your French brunch experience with a pastry board with house-made assorted French pastries and baguettes served with jam (changes weekly; during our visit, it was Strawberry Citrus), which are so good you could easily fill up on them if you don’t restrain yourself. Which you’ll definitely want to do, so you’ll have room for the sweet finales like the Vanilla Crème Brulee Tart with Harry’s Berries or Croustillant Chocolate Cremeaux with house-made smoked vanilla ice cream. I never would have thought about having a smoked finish to an ice cream, but it was an interesting and delightful surprise.

Tomato Tartine

Yet another happy surprise is the fact that for the first time ever, you can now purchase Chef James Trees’ and Corporate Pastry Chef Jake Yergensen’s sought-after sourdough and signature baked goods for retail sale at a monthly pop-up. Offered from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the third Saturday of every month, Bar Boheme transforms into a morning bakery experience where guests can either purchase items to go or stay and enjoy with fresh Vesta coffee drinks. The offerings include the famed sourdough bread; Bar Boheme’s Parisian baguettes; Al Solito Posto’s focaccia; and a rotating selection of croissants, pastries, and other baked treats from across Chef James Trees’ restaurant portfolio. The inaugural sale on June 20 sold out in one hour, so plan on arriving early if you want more options.

Smoked Salmon Crepe Cake

Bar Boheme is located in the heart of the Las Vegas Arts District at 1401 S Main and Imperial. In addition to the Sunday brunch, it’s open for dinner Wednesday-Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Las Vegas Chef Wins James Beard Award

After a record 14 Las Vegas chefs were nominated, Sarah Thompson, Executive Chef at the coastal Mexican Casa Playa at Wynn Las Vegas, was recognized with the James Beard Award in the category of Best Chef: Southwest. Chef Sarah is the first Las Vegas chef to win a James Beard Award in 15 years, and is also the first female on the Strip to win a James Beard Award.

The awards ceremony was held on June 15 in Chicago, and our own Gemini Stevens interviewed Chef Sarah just before her award was announced. Chef attributed her success to her past training and her current team, saying, “I’m so lucky to have been trained by some of the best Mexican chefs in the world. We are nothing without our team. I’m not Mexican, so I look at my cooks and seek out to make sure our food is authentic and make sure they’re feeling represented through this restaurant.”

Recently, on the Food and Loathing Podcast

Be sure to check out Food and Loathing this week (and every week). The podcast features veteran food writer Al Mancini, along with co-host Samantha Gemini Stevens and producer Rich Johnson, as they give the lowdown on what’s new, hot, and delicious in America’s most glamorous city, as they talk with chefs, bartenders, journalists, and other experts on where to go and what to order when you get there.

Al is back in town after a nearly two-week vacation in Italy. But not soon enough, so Gemini and Rich have hijacked the show once again. Gem scores the first interview with Las Vegas’ own Floriana Pastore of Signora Pizza since it was named “Best Street Pizza” by THE BEST PIZZA AWARDS broadcast from Milan, Italy. She also talks to Jake Yorgensen minutes after Bar Boheme’s first Sunday Bake Shop event sold out—in about one hour. Gem also shares a few Vegas restaurant visits, Rich is loving the World Cup vibes in Seattle, and Al has a cameo appearance on the Happy Hour Report with Happy Hour Vegas’ Andrew Morgan.
