Three happy hours this week, and every one has a family story on the sign out front: a Sicilian father’s Henderson legacy with $10 filet mignon meatballs, a sushi bar named after a Paris cooking school pouring $8 sake at Green Valley Ranch, and a Southwest raw bar named for the chef’s great-grandmother, with sushi starting at $2.

Gaetano Palmeri moved his Italian restaurant from Calabasas, California, to a Henderson shopping center on South Eastern Avenue in 2002. He passed away in 2019, and today his son Nick and his wife, Sarah, own the restaurant. That family feeling runs straight through the happy hour, which is built for the bar and not borrowed from the dinner menu. The meatballs blend filet mignon, veal and pork, two for $10, a steakhouse grind at a sandwich shop price. The fried lasagna ($12) is a dish you won’t find on any other Henderson happy hour menu, and the rigatoni alla vodka ($12) is made with Tito’s, with Calabrian chili if you ask.

To drink, the $10 Sicilian Old Fashioned trades simple syrup for spiced Demerara and adds Amaro Averna, Sicily’s bittersweet herbal liqueur, to a pour of Wild Turkey 101. Then there’s the late play. During reverse happy hour, full dinner entrées are half off with any drink, which turns the $60 filet into a $30 filet. Gaetano would have called that hospitality. You can call it the smartest dinner reservation you make all week.

Blue Ribbon Sushi Happy Hour

Here’s some trivia for your next round. “Blue Ribbon” is the English version of Cordon Bleu, the Paris cooking school where brothers Bruce and Eric Bromberg trained. They opened their first Blue Ribbon in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood on November 3, 1992, which makes this week the 34th anniversary. Las Vegas got its first taste in 2010 at the Cosmopolitan, their first restaurant outside New York, and the Green Valley Ranch sushi bar is the newest chapter.

The weekend schedule is the quiet flex. Happy hour starts at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, which turns a lazy lunch into a proper sushi session. Hand rolls are $9: spicy tuna, salmon avocado, spicy crab, spicy scallop or kanikama California. Cocktails, wine and sake are $8 each. My advice: order the scallop roll you’d skip at full price. And save room for Nov. 12, when Blue Ribbon brings spicy tuna hand rolls, chicken yakitori skewers and a Kyoto Old Fashioned to the Biggest Happy Hour in Las Vegas at Sunset Station.

Other Mama Happy Hour

Chef Dan Krohmer named his restaurant for his great-grandmother, the woman who raised his father and his siblings and whom everyone called “Other Mama.” Krohmer grew up in Northern California, started in sushi kitchens at 18, trained in Japan, cooked for Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, and fed touring musicians before opening on South Durango Drive in March 2015. A year later, Eater Las Vegas named him Chef of the Year. More than a decade on, it’s still a strip mall storefront, now with an extra 1,000 square feet of lounge.

Happy hour is still the best way in. Sushi starts at $2, hand rolls are $5, and cocktails are $10. Balance the raw bar with something hot, like the crispy pork skewers or the Japanese fried chicken, then find a cocktail built on Japanese whisky or mezcal. Look down the bar, and you’ll likely spot cooks from other kitchens on their night off. In this town, that’s the real Michelin guide. The early window is only an hour, so arrive at 5. Night owls get a second shot on Friday and Saturday.
