Sip, Shop, and Step Back in Time at Barter Beer + Mall

It’s often said that brewing beer is an art. Barter Beer + Mall agrees—bringing together beer, traditional art forms, and vintage collectables under one roof.

Located in the Arts District near Wyoming Avenue and Commerce Street, this one-of-a-kind spot holds a retail liquor license, allowing visitors to sip on local brews while exploring an ever-changing collection of artwork and vintage finds throughout the store. The bar features local beers like Able Baker Atomic Duck IPA, HUDL Vanilla Oak, Lovelady 9th Island Pineapple Sour and Paleo Porter, and Neon Desert Vice City Hefe. The offerings are rounded out with crushable Busch Lager, Light, and Apple; canned cocktails, wine, and shooters; sodas; and snacks. A bartender sells drinks and snacks at a retail counter, with several tables and chairs nearby where you can sit and sip.

The 6,000-square-foot store is owned by Derek Stonebarger of ReBAR fame, Steve Sansonetti, and Suzanne Roozendaal, all serious collectors of art and vintage memorabilia. Originally planned as a storage space, it evolved into a vibrant marketplace where artists and collectors can display, sell, and even create their work onsite. The name “Barter” cleverly combines elements of the founders’ passions—bar, art, and ER (a nod to Roozendaal’s profession as an emergency room doctor).

More than 40 clients lease out sections of the store, paying between $75 and $320 a month, depending on the size of the gallery space. Vendors also commit to working a number of six-hour shifts in the store, providing customer service across all areas—not just their own.

The model provides local artists with an affordable and accessible way to showcase their work, eliminating the need for usually exorbitant rent. “Barter has a good mix of art and vintage that draws people in,” says vendor artist Adam Kelsven. “And this is the first place I’ve ever set up at to have my work shown where people can see it.”

And there’s plenty to see. Treasures range from $4 trinkets to $16,000 for rare original artwork. The store feels like a museum or a veritable step back in time, filled with original artwork, vintage neon beer signs, Doc Martens, VCR and 8-track tapes, comic books, Playboy magazines, vinyl records, baseball cards, cast iron skillets, clothing, themed lunch boxes (such as X-Men and Power Rangers), movie posters (e.g. Jaws), board games from the ’60s and ’70s, and classic video games.

It’s part gallery, part bar, part time capsule—and with a drink in hand, chances are you’ll leave with more than you came for.

Barter Beer + Mall is open Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday and Thursday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
