Pick of the Week: Mi Casa Grill Cantina

Mi Casa Grill Cantina Offering a Taste of Mexico and Japan All Under One Roof

Mi Casa at the Silverton has been a locals’ favorite since its opening in 2006, likely because of its reasonable pricing, extensive menu, and generous portions.

Located just off the casino, the décor is, in a word, colorful. Throughout are a mix of brightly colored clay earthen jugs, lanterns, colored glass, sunflowers, and tile posts. The ambiance is also enhanced by black-and-white photos of Mexican historical figures, rock tile flooring, hanging woven rope, and dark wood tables and walls.

If guacamole is your preference, you’re in luck, as you can design your own concoction by beginning with the tableside presentation with a choice of avocado, jalapeño, tomato, cilantro, fresh lime juice, red onion, lobster, and mango. Other enticing starters are the classic ceviche with shrimp or a more upscale version with tuna and toasted corn nuts and habanero-infused orange juice; and, as any Mexican restaurant worth its salt will have nachos, you can splurge here with a sizeable portion with guacamole, pico de gallo, beans, fresh jalapenos, sour cream, and Oaxaca/asadero cheese and options to add grilled or shredded chicken, grilled asada, taco meat, and machaca.

Fajitas can be customized with your choice of proteins—chicken, steak, shrimp, or combo of all three—burritos offer options of carne asada, shredded carnitas, ground beef, and stewed pork. Both come with rice and refried beans and are large enough to give you at least another meal or two at home. Further proof that you won’t be leaving hungry is the tacos. They come three to an order in a plethora of options, including white fish, shrimp, carnitas, blackened salmon, chicken tinga, carne asada, and beef birria with a consumé broth for dipping, plus rice and refried beans.

Mexico is well known for its production of tequila, mezcals, and other agave-based spirits, and they’re well represented here, with more than 45 to choose from. Want your tequila in the form of a cocktail? How about one of the six margaritas, like the La Diabla with Teremana Anejo, prickly pear syrup, mango juice, agave syrup, lime juice, and a sweet-and-sour finish. They also offer several Mexican cervezas, including Corona, Dos XX Amber, Dos XX Lager, Modelo, Negro Modelo, and Pacifico.

Mi Casa is actually two restaurants in one. The dining room features Su Casa Sushi, with décor including oversized rice pots, a sushi chef, and an 11-seat sushi bar. The menu includes a full line of poke bowls, nigiri, sashimi, and signature rolls like the Orange Dream with tempura salmon, orange-scented mascarpone cheese, avocado, Cajun-seared salmon, lemon slice, red onion, masago, and truffle ponzu. Most menu items are priced under $20.

A nice surprise on the dessert menu is the Warm Chocolate Cake, a lava cake with a warm, molten chocolate center served with peanut butter powder, vanilla ice cream, and chocolate sauce.

Mi Casa has a lot going for it, foremost among them a comfortable environment, quick and efficient service, and prices that are easy on the pocketbook. Hours are Sun-Thu 4 to 9 p.m. and Fri-Sat 4 to 9:30 p.m. For more info and to view the complete menus, visit silvertoncasino.com/dining/mi-casa-grill-cantina.
