Pick of the Week: The Pepper Club

The Pepper Club in the English Hotel has been providing a bright spot to the quadrant of the Arts District on the north side of Charleston. Now it is raising the bar with the debut of its new menu, curated by Director of Food & Beverage for Midtown Chef Bruce Kalman and Executive Chef Manny Rivera.

Chef Bruce Kalman is the owner/founder of SoulBelly BBQ and is renowned for his TV appearances on Top Chef, Chopped, Beat Bobby Flay, and BBQ Brawl. He is joined by Executive Chef Manny Rivera, a native Las Vegan who began his culinary education at the local high school magnet school East Career Technical Academy, followed by classes in Restaurant Management at CSN. Chef Manny furthered his education working at some accomplished establishments, including Honey Salt, Andiron, Nomad, Guy Savoy, DB Brasserie, and Kassi Beach House, before taking the head chef position at The Pepper Club. Chef Bruce and Chef Manny collaborate on a menu of dishes that celebrate sustainability, local sourcing, and chef-driven creativity.

The room has a very calm and vibrant vibe that’s elevated while casual, thanks to an open kitchen, glass tubes above the rectangular wraparound bar, ample windows, rust/white colored booths, and, befitting its Arts District location, walls adorned with original artwork by local artists.

The Pepper Club is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menus are decidedly Italian-inspired with some global influences scattered throughout. Highlights include 5-day cured Pork Meatballs with caper berries and San Marzano tomatoes; Chicken Parmesan, an 8 oz chicken breast breaded with panko and topped with ricotta, burrata, and Calabrian chile; Short Rib Hash braised overnight and served with two sunny eggs, potatoes, and aromatic vegetables; Eggs in Purgatory, a Mideastern shakshuka version with poached eggs, roasted bell pepper, mint, tomato, and saffron; Roasted Beet Hummus with crispy chickpeas, golden beets, and flatbread; and Chicken & Waffles, bringing a global feel with chicken karaage and gochu glaze. All pastas are made in-house, including the no frills, simple yet elegant Bucatini Cacio E Pepe made with just pasta, rustic water, butter, and crushed black pepper; and Ricotta Ravioli Alla Vodka with pink vodka sauce.

Desserts worth saving room for are the Chocolate Meringue Cookie with vanilla gelato and Amarena cherries or the Lemon Panna Cotta with strawberries and balsamic.

Complementing the fare is a small but global wine list with the likes of the Italian Santi Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG; craft beers including local Able Baker Atomic Duck and Tenaya Creek Craft Pilsner; about 30 whiskey options such as Weller Antique; and cocktails like the most popular Ube Bae with RumHaven Caribbean rum, ube puree, coconut, and pineapple.

Prices are pretty reasonable, with all appetizers $18 and under and most entrees under $20. More money saving can be found in the twice daily happy hour from 3 to 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. to close with Tomato Goat Cheese & Tomato Dip or Roasted Beet Hummus for $6, Pork Meatballs for $8, and Beef Carpaccio for $11; and beer, wine, and well drinks priced from $7-$12. The best deal of all is the daily “$6 Pasta Hour” from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. with demi portion choices of Mushroom Cavatelli, Rigatoni, and Stracciatella.

The patrons are an even mix of hotel guests, locals, and tourists who are enjoying having another excellent eatery to provide them with yet another incentive to head down to the popular Arts District, and with free parking thrown in as an added plus.
