Pick of the Week: Zaytinya

Zaytinya is now open at the Forum Shops at Caesars. One of the few Mediterranean concepts on the Vegas Strip, it marks the 7th Las Vegas restaurant by acclaimed Chef José Andrés.

Spanning 8,604 square feet, the restaurant designed by the Rockwell Group evokes the soul of the Eastern Mediterranean with hand-painted pendant lamps depicting birds and fruit, faux olive trees, mosaic tile, a working fireplace complete with a large hood, towering brown columns, dark blue booths, semi-private dining areas surrounded by elegant drapery, and the back bar with a blue and white glass structure that is symbolic of the Greek Evil Eye.

Zaytinya means olive oil in Turkish and is also the title of Andrés’ cookbook of Greek, Lebanese, and Turkish recipes, so it’s not surprising that the menu features the same and reflects José Andrés’ deep knowledge of Mediterranean cooking and years of research and travel. Offered is a wide range of mezze (small dishes served as appetizers or a meal itself in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines) from classic spreads like labneh and baba ganoush to signature dishes such as Soujouk Pide—spicy soujouk sausage, kasar cheese, and a soft-cooked egg on flatbread; grilled Octopus Santorini served with marinated onions, capers, and yellow split pea purée; and vegetable-forward options like house-made spanakopita and seasonal salads.

There are other Zaytinya locations in Washington, D.C., NYC, Florida’s South Beach, and Culver City, CA, but the Las Vegas location’s main course category is unique.

Offerings include Grilled Lamb Chops prepared with Tangier spice paired with spring pea tzatziki; Chicken Muhamarra—roast half chicken with roasted red pepper and walnut puree, tomato-pomegranate salad, and chicken jus; Grilled Salmon with hand-rolled couscous, spring vegetables, and spicy harissa broth; and Prime Beef Mishwi—grilled USDA Prime steak, caramelized onion, greens, beef jus, and pistachio ladotyri.

Desserts are Lemon Olive Oil Cake with berries and orange blossom cream, Turkish Coffee Chocolate Cake with molten center, Valrhona chocolate cake and Turkish coffee syrup served with mastic ice cream, and Greek Yogurt and Cherries with sour cherry compote and vanilla yogurt cream.

The beverage program features cocktails like the Greek Pomona, a Mediterranean mojito with ouzo and pomegranate and Ancient Olive Martini with unique olive oil fat-washed gin; Greek wines like Malagousia from Gerovassiliou, Macedonia, Greece; and spirits such as Lebanese Arak, Greek Mastiha, and Turkish Raki.

Zaytinya is open daily for dinner from 5 p.m. For more info and to view the complete menu, visit zaytinya.com/location/las-vegas.
